I have to admit, it was the illustrations that drew me to The Underneath to start with–David, I’m sure I’ve said before on this blog that I’m a huge fan of your art. It’s always awesome. I quickly discovered, though, that this book was much more than it appeared. Kathi, I love the way you intertwined the storylines, the past and the present all melding into something extremely mythic in feel. It read rather like a folk story, both because of the prevalence of animal characters and the repetitive language. The illustrations were a nice counterpoint, so alive and vibrant in their simple lines that they really grounded the story in a modern setting and kept it from flying too far away from readers’ ability to identify. Now my academic roots are showing! Five stars for you both.
